・Common name [通称]：コウエンボク、Copperpod, Yellow-flame, etc.

・Burmese name： Thinbaw-mezali（ティンボーメザリ）

・戸籍：外来（自生地：主にマラヤ地方） / ID：exotic (origin in Malaya)

生き物の名前を科学的に表記する際にはカタカナを用いることが通例だが、この和名を見て、公園木かーと思いきや…「黄炎木」ですと！

ビルマ語名の前半分の「ティンボー」とは「船」のことで、植物の名前の頭に付いていれば、船で来たもの、イコール、外来種であることを意味している。つまり、名前の後半分にある「メザリ」というよく似た在来の樹木も元々存在しているということになる。

メザリとは「タガヤサン（Senna siamea）」のことで、町場ではあまり見ないが、林業の世界では重硬木として知られている。コウエンボクの葉は、ホウオウボクと同じく二回羽状複葉で展開するが、タガヤサンは一回羽状複葉。http://onishingo.blogspot.com/2020/05/2-common-trees-in-yangon-2.html

“Thinbaw” in Burmese name means “ship”. In case “Thinbaw” is put on the top of a plant name, it suggests that this plant could be imported from some foreign country (by a ship). That is to say that this plant should be an exotic species. Then, by this name, we can also know that there is a native species “Mezari” in Myanmar.

Mezali is Senna siamea. This tree uncommonly can be seen in urban areas. But it is known well as a hard and heavy wood in the forestry sector.

Peltophorum pterocarpumrpum leafs twice pinnately compound leaves (bipinnate leaves). On the other hand, Senna siamea leafs single pinnately compound leaves.

花びらは大きく、英語名にあるとおり、ちりめん布やちりめん紙のように薄くてしわしわ。花の色は、一本の木の中にも紫から白まで現れる。

日本で植栽されているサルスベリの花とはサイズこそ違うものの、色や形はよく似ている。けれども、和名の由来ともなっている樹皮を見ると、オオバナサルスベリはごわごわで、サルスベリとは似ても似つかない。

ミャンマーには、まったく別種のミャウッチョー（Myauk-chaw）という名のイイギリ科の木が自生するが、ミャウッは「サル」、チョーは「滑る」で、直訳すると「猿滑り」となってしまう。実際、樹皮はつるつるで、サルの手のひら足のひらには引っかからないかもしれない。爪を立てられるネコ科ならなんとか登れるかもだが。

優秀な通訳の方でも、ご自身の専門外の分野のことでは、思わぬ誤訳、誤解になってしまうことがあるので、翻訳者も依頼者も、くれぐれもご注意を。

多くの人が「火炎樹」と呼んでいるのは、その2.で紹介したホウオウボクを指しており、こちらの名前は「火炎木」。

樹冠全体ではなく、花冠の一つ分が、メラメラと燃える炎のようで、チューリップの花にも似ている。

・Common name [通称]：ナンバンサイカチ、Golden shower, etc.

黄色い花が樹冠一面に咲くのでパダウと間違えそうだが、花房がフジの花のように垂下する。さらに、一日で散り始めるパダウに比べて、花が咲いている期間がはるかに長いという点でも区別できる。

Its crown becomes full of yellow flowers after blooming. So, it looks like Padauk. But the bunch of flowers is hanging down longer, and its flowering period is much longer than Padauk’s.

花が散った後には、ドラムのバチのような黒っぽくて細長い実がぶら下がる。

After flowers are fallen, the drumstick-shaped fruit is borne and hanging down.

・Common name [通称]：ホウオウボク、Flamboyant, Royal poinciana, etc.

・Burmese name：Seinpan（セインパン）

この木をカエンジュと呼ぶ方も多いが、その呼称を使っている図鑑や専門書は、まずないので要注意。

軸の左右に葉っぱが並んで鳥の羽毛のようになっているパターンを羽状複葉と言い、軸の左右にもう一段軸が出て、そこに葉っぱが並ぶパターンを二回羽状複葉と言う。ホウオウボクの葉は二回羽状複葉になっている。

花びらが黄色い品種もある。

ビルマ語名、セインパンは、ダイヤモンドの花という意味だが、冷涼なシャン台地などには、青いセインパン（Seinpan-pya）と呼ばれる紫色の花を付けるよく似た木がある。けれども、これは、キリモドキ（ジャカランダ、Jacaranda acutifolia）という別種で、属からして違う。

Its local name “Seinpan” means Diamond flower. “Seinpan-pya” what means Blue Diamond flower can be seen in some cooler areas. This purple flowered tree is other species named Jacaranda (Jacaranda acutifolia). These two trees are different even on the genus level.
