・Botanical name [学名]：Terminalia catappa

・Common name [通称]：モモタマナ、コバテイシ、Indian almond, Sea almond, ect.

・Burmese name： Banda（バンダ）

・戸籍：在来 / ID：indigenous

枝が、階層を作るようにまとまって放射状に展開し、ほぼ水平に伸びるため、日陰が求められる道端や広場などによく植えられる。例えば沖縄でも、親族一同が長時間たたずむ習慣のある墓地で、よく見られる。

Its branches spread out almost levelly and radially layer by layer, thus, provide shade. So, this species is suitably planted at roadsides, public squares, etc. For example in Okinawa, Japan, it is commonly seen at graveyards where relatives gather and stay for a couple of hours.

落葉する直前の葉っぱは真紅に紅葉する。一気に大量に落葉する時以外にも、樹冠のどこかに紅葉した葉っぱが周年見られる。

Leaves turn red just before falling. Many leaves fall together within a very short span in the particular season. Moreover, a few leaves on a crown regularly turn red one after another throughout the year.

果実は、形も大きさもウミガメの子に似ており、エヤワディー管区の一部では、「亀の子の実」と呼ばれている。

その中の種子は食べられ、アーモンドに似ているが、本物のアーモンドほどの“カリッと食感”は期待できない。

A fruit is like a baby turtle in shape and size. So, it is called “Baby turtle fruit” in some areas in Ayeyarwady Region.

And its seed is edible. It looks like an almond but is not crisp as a real almond, I felt.

市街地や集落に植えられているマンゴーは改良されたもので、何十もの果実の品種がある。けれども、品種は飽くまで品種であって、種類としては一種類、すべてがマンゴー（Mangifera indica）という樹種である。

Mango trees which are planted in cities and villages are improved varieties. There are dozens of varieties of mango fruit. But they are just varieties of one species, Mangifera indica.

野生のマンゴーの原種は、太くて真っ直ぐな常緑の大高木だ。
 Wild mango tree is a very big and straight evergreen tree.

・Common name [通称]：アメリカネムノキ、モンキーポッド、Rain tree, Monkeypod, etc.

・Burmese name： Thinbaw-kokko（ティンボーコーコー）

・戸籍：外来（自生地：中南米） / ID：exotic (origin in Latin America)

日立の企業CMに出てくる「この木なんの木」はこの種で、ハワイで撮影されている。自生地は新大陸のほうなので、ハワイやミャンマーでは移入種となる。私は、ヒデ 夕樹さんの歌うオリジナルバージョンが大好きでした。

Sep., Singu Tsp. Mandalay Reg.

樹高はそれほどでもないが、傘の広がり（樹冠の面積）は、樹木界最大かもしれない。大きな木陰を提供するため、イギリス植民地時代から道端や集落や公園に好んで植えられていたと思われる。

Although its height is not so high, the branches spread very widely. An expanse of the crown could be broadest among all tree species. As it supplies with the huge shade, this species is purposely planted by roadsides, at villages and parks since British colonial period.

かつて、ヤンゴン-マンダレー間の幹線は、ネムノキ街道と言ってもいいぐらい木陰のトンネルが続いていたが、道を拡幅するために大量の木が伐採された。

その材が市場に流れているようで、最近の小洒落たレストランの広大な一枚板のテーブルや輪切りの円卓は、ほとんどがこの種の材である。

Oct.

The main trunk road between Yangon and Mandalay looked like a tree shade tunnel before. So, I could call it the rain tree street. But many trees were felled in order to widen the road.

Then, their timbers come onto the market. Very wide one plate tables or round tables at recent stylish restaurants are mostly made of this species.

Closed leaves, Jul.

おそらく湿度が関係するのだろうが、雨降りの直前などに、予報するかのように葉を閉じる。それが、英名「レインツリー」の由来で、その姿は、まさにネムるよう。

It occasionally closes pinnately compound leaves just before rainfall, for example. That is why it is called “Rain tree”. This reaction may be related with humidity.

Nov., Mattaya Tsp. Mandalay Reg.

ビルマ語名命名の慣例どおり、コーコーという在来種がある（Albizia lebbeck , Kokko, ビルマネムノキ）。アメリカネムノキほど大きくはならないが、材は、より重くて硬い。

ちまたで見られるは、ほとんどアメリカネムノキのほうなので、今ではわざわざティンボーコーコーと呼ぶことはほとんどなく、単に「コーコー」と言っても、ほぼアメリカネムノキを指している。

As we can suppose by the local name, there is an indigenous species, Kokko (Albizia lebbeck). It is smaller than Thinbaw-kokko but heavier and harder.

Thinbaw-kokko is much widely planted in public areas, so, people mostly call Samanea saman Kokko instead of Thinbaw-kokko.

・Common name [通称]：ヨウラクボク、Queen of flowering tree, Pride of Burma

・Burmese name： Thawka（トーカ）

「花木の女王」「ビルマの誇り」などと名付けられている割には、道端ではほとんど見られず、この花のことが話題なることも少なく、ミャンマーでは存在自体あまり知られてなさそうだ。

Fruit, Mar.

Even though it is called “Queen of flowering tree” or “Pride of Burma”, it is rarely seen along the streets and rarely talked about. This tree may not be known well in Myanmar.

母国がこの魅惑的な木の原産地であることに、ミャンマーの人たちはもっとプライドを持ってもいいかも。

Mar.

I hope Myanmar people to be more proud of the country as the homeland of this fascinate tree.
